Items worth more when reselling?

Has anyone else had this happen in their game? I've found that when I buy items for my sims house, and then I go to sell them they sell for MORE rather than less. They should depreciate in value over time but all my items are going the opposite way - take this bed for example, the price to buy is 2400 but it resells at 3200

Is this a bug? If so does anyone know how to get it going the right way?

Some items to appreciate in value, others depreciate. The idea is to buy up on the ones you find that sell for more and sell them when they have increased in value to make some extra simoleans. There is a vase I used to buy sometimes but in the end I forgot about it. I think it was the Dragon Vase.

EDIT: Another thing that gains value are paintings done by sim artists. With a house full of paintings hung on the wall the Sim household's value can skyrocket if the artist gets up to a high level in the painting skill.
