Random Content Installation Question

I am getting a new computer and reinstalling everything. Sadly I let Origin automatically update my Sims 3 when I tried out Sims 4 and forgot to use the launcher bypass. Since my game no longer works I have been organizing my custom content and store purchases while I wait for the computer to arrive. I was wondering if anyone knows why we have to install every piece of content through the launcher instead of just dumping it in a folder and booting up the game? I know mods and package files can just go in the mods folder and they magically work. Why aren't all sims 3 files package files? This is kind of a random question, and it really doesn't make a difference because I sill have to install everything, but does anyone know the answer?

I guess these are the kinds of questions that come up when I want to play the Sims but have to wait for a computer. :D
  • I have a better one. A train leaves Chicago at 8am traveling eastward at an average speed of 78.5 miles per hour while a second train... (hears crickets). Hey, where did everybody go? :p

Your Launcher installed TS3 store content resides in bundles in your DCCache folder, the ebc files. Your Launcher installed CC are the dbc files. Any tmp file in there are expendable garbage. You should be able to just move the ebc and dbc files over to the DCCache in a new install once the game folder is spawned there, in many cases the game will accept them. Already installed store and custom worlds will also have a .world file in InstalledWorlds.

Sometimes store content finding itself in a new environment or a new install type will refuse to load and in that case really will need to be Launcher installed again.

If you really want to redo everything instead of using the file bundles in the older DCCache folder, that's of course fine too. But I'm afraid the answer to why sim3packs are more difficult to work with than packages is just "Because EA did it that way."

  • Lol, that is funny because every time my daughter says, "Mom I have a question?" I always reply"Train A leaves Baltimore traveling 75 mph..." I don't know why my train is always leaving Baltimore...

I actually didn't know after all this time that the store content and custom content lived in the DCCache folder after it had been installed. I knew it didn't live in the downloads folder, but I didn't know where it had gone. I think I will try installing the store content that way and see what happens. I want to pick through my custom content, but all I seem to be doing is adding to it. :)

Thank you to the answer to my question about sims3packs. I am not really sure why EA did a lot of things the way it did. Like Patch 1.69. Pure evil I tell you.
  • Perhaps the underlying feeling is that Baltimore is a better place to be getting away from than traveling towards. Before this makes anyone upset, it's a little known fact (I think, probably no one cares) but although most of my growing up time was spent much further north, I was actually born in Maryland. And I like Baltimore, or at least I used to.

You're welcome and good luck with the new install. :)

  • Wow, I just really messed up the whole quoting thing. I haven't posted in a long time. :D
