Reduce lag in Sims 3 with threaded optimization?

Hey guys,

So for any tech-savies for you out there I have two questions. I have recently been fiddling with the NVIDIA Control panel settings just to reduce lag in my game because it lags like crazy for me, no matter the world and save (I have Nraas)

So 1. Have you tried turning on "threaded optimization" and did you see any difference? I feel like there was slight better performance in my game after turning it on but maybe it's just a placebo effect. What do you say?

2. Do you know of any other settings in the control panel that work well with the Sims 3? Vsync (on, fast or adaptive?) Triple buffering?

Also bonus question. Are there any settings in the actual game settings you turn down or think could cause problems with lag if too high? I found for example decreasing high detail lots does almost nothing to improve lag.

  • Have you done the usual stuff to reduce lag? Make sure the game is regonizing your graphics card, increase the texture memory it can use etc, etc. I used to have a problem with crashing, but after dedicating more texture memory to the game it never did again.

Nraas storyprogression may lag your game to oblivion if your PC is old. What sort of lag do you have? If you have pie menu lag (lagging when clicking on sim) a lot of store content causes that.
You should always have v-sync on for it because TS3 does not limit FPS -at all-.

@Marinuttonen If you don't mind, I would love if you could explain this further. First I'll answer what you asked.

I have a modern PC. I own a gtx 1060 6gb, 16gb of ram and a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU. This hardware is all from 2016-17 and later.
I have story progression installed. I have a few Sims 3 Store bundles installed, yet only 7 expansions and no stuff packs. But I do get pie menu lag every now and then.

I haven't done much to reduce lag. The game probably doesn't recognize my card but since it shows up in my GeForce Experience (which I use to optimize settings) I thought it didn't matter. If it indeed does, do you happen to have a link on how to do that? Also the one to increase texture memory. Haven't done it so I would love to know how. I might just google it as well.

The type of lag I experience is the game freezing for a few milliseconds. It's kind of like the Island paradise lag but in all worlds. If I have a sim walk towards a direction for example, the sim will take steps then suddenly freeze for a few tiny milliseconds and then unfreeze. This will happen every 5-20 seconds. The animations are also very laggy, with sims stopping and continuing. Turning the camera also causes these "freeze moments".

Thanks again for your help btw.
  • The pie menu lag happens because your game is boggled with options on the pie menu, store content that adds gameplay does that, but if the lag stays under 1 sec it's not a huge issue. Just depends how you can personally deal with it. The turning around lag I get with too little texture memory, You may also want to turn a few options down even if your graphics card maybe able to do ultra. Turning down trees, visual effects & lighting to medium may drastically improve your performance while having very little effect on how the game looks.

Easiest way to make the game regonize your card & icrease texture memory is to download the progran "TS3 GPU Addon" from nexus mods, it will do it all for you with a few clicks.

The lag you get other than that, sounds like routing issues. If you have Nraas register installed, go into it's setting and animal control, and turn wild horses either completely off or down. I usually have them at 1 raccoon & deer, 3 stray cats & dogs and then 2 wild horses. Horses are very prone to routing failures. Also download the mod "Interractions on sloped terrain" from ModTheSims, that will clear a lot of routing failures.
