One of the sets of reasons this can happen in addition to the portfolio thing would be due to pre-existing conditions that have nothing to do with the job your sim was taking on. If the residential lot does not have enough beds, for example, for the current household living there, you will get the squalor complaints (even if what you were working on was the home office or kitchen). Bunk beds do not always register as two sleeping slots and often enough unpartnered YAs or older will each require their own double-beds to satisfy that requirement. Babies, toddlers, and pregnant sims each require a crib of their own. The lack of a fridge onsite would also do it.
The lot may have met the family's needs when they acquired it, but of course things change as sims are born and age up over time; it's always been annoying that inactive sims have no way to purchase their own furniture without having to move to a new house just because they are currently lacking one bed or crib.
