University Herbs and Beans

I've cut back on my gardening. I used to keep a long row (2 sprinklers worth) of each plant. I had to get the gardener service in to look after them all (they sent three sims each day). I'm down to 4 rows and one sprinkler. I'm somewhat OCD and have to have some perfect sample of each in the fridge. I'm working on cutting down. I don't use the herbs much, except ginseng, and the Maui Bean especially for my travellers trying to finish tasks. Before I cut back more, I'd love to hear your experiences with herbs and whether they are worth the bother.
  • The only herbs I routinely consider growing and keeping are wonderpetal and peppermint. Wonderpetal helps academic performance at university and since I routinely send sims to get a degree having perfect quality wonderpetal is helpful. I will occasionally use peppermint in cooking with the Cook With Any Ingredient mod so that the dishes in which I include peppermint give a nice moodlet.

The only coffee bean I routinely grow in my games is the red berry bean since it's worth so much - it makes a great cash crop.

edit: I forgot about ginseng. All my households grow that now to make double-boiled ginseng broth from the canning station overhaul mod. The broth cures the 'germy' moodlet. I usually use the Swift-Gro gardening station for that (and the slower herbs) so it doesn't take so long.
  • I get my Sims to buy them from the store. Not quite as perfect quality but nice and easy and a quick meal when in a rush

I have my sims grow the red berry bean because it's the most valuable of all garden plants, worth twice as much as the life fruit. The one herb I grow the most is sweet grass, which will cure nausea. I try to accumulate lots of it before I have my female sims get pregnant, or before I have a sim start doing alchemy, or anything else that might make them nauseated. If I have a sim going to university, I might grow wonderpetal for them, but I've found more recently that if I have them use the Multi Tab 6000 to listen to tabcasts related to their major, they don't need any other extra boosts to keep their academic progress high, so I don't used wonderpetal as much as I used to. I usually grow all of the coffee beans and herbs if my sims garden, but I don't actually use very many of them.
  • Way worth it,I think it's Bumbleleaf basically gives you the hidden trait firefighters have where you cant be burned "Great for laughing at WA fire traps" and of course cinnamon.Cinnamon is a must for the sims who like the ladies your romantic interactions chances are improved but who needs that anyway. :s

Am like you take the easy route at the store, plus before starting a game add two harvest stand premium contents in front of your store. For finding rare stuff the stock rotates randomly so you never know what you can buy.

I don't like that they take longer to grow than regular plants, so I generally don't bother growing them at home. Instead, I add them to the garden of the Elixir Store.
  • I’m watching this thread because my sims would like to be better at gardening but they always forget they have a garden to look after!

That's why the gardener service mod is so useful. Your sims can continue to garden but gardeners show up each day to tend the garden and put the harvested produce in the fridge at the end of the day.
  • Several years ago, I made a lot with all perfect plants already on it. I just put that in town somewhere as a park and have my sims come by once or twice a week to harvest stuff. Especially when you have a green dragon, it doesn't take very long. I just have to remember to put a fence around it if I have Pets installed. Otherwise the deer & horses come by and eat all the plants.

I hardly ever grow stuff at home these days, unless I'm doing a gardening related LTW.
