Residential lots can safely be changed to community lots, and community lots can safely be changed to residential lots. If a stove is on a residential lot (and a few other items) it will be removed when the lot becomes commercial. And some commercial items will be removed if a lot becomes residential. You may get a popup telling you that some items were removed. This is normal.
You should always move any gravestones or urns to the graveyard prior to making changes, but if you forget, then move them after the fact. Just don't delete them while demolishing a house. Some empty houses DO have gravestones or urns, so be careful about that.
Also check for spawners on any lot you are changing, even after bulldozing. Especially when going from commercial to residential.
What I have started to do recently is demolish a house and lot slowly to make sure I haven't missed an urn hidden away in an attic or behind a bush on a lot, or even in a basement. Once I'm sure the lot is "clean," then either bulldoze/flatten it or if the lot is totally empty after I've deleted things, I just flatten it prior to rebuilding what I want on the lot. It takes more time, but them I'm sure I haven't messed something up, along the way.
