Can't do the update

I have tried to update my game several times since yesterday.  Gets to the end of it and shows an error.  Is there anyway I can fix this?  I love the Sims 3 but can't update.  Also I can't download the free items that others put on your site.  I downloaded the free outfit, says I own it but it's not there in clothing.  Looked in all types of clothes.
