dont worry, i work in IT field, and my drive space is fine - as i said, i checked the default apps in control panel already, if you are talking about "standard app (by file type)", theres nothing related to sims there - in "standard settings per app", the launcher doesnt show up and in "standard app (by protocol)" i cant find anything aswell.
(note that all of those quotes are translated literally from german win10, i assume its comprehensible still)
enabling the port on my router is an idea, i didnt know that this could affect the win10 app select behavior - ill try that out. what ports are being used by the launcher downloads? only tcp80?
@FlyingSnerzFM not sure about the port as I never had to check it. I think your looking in the wrong place for file TYPE though.
open control panel
click default progams
click associate a file type or protocol with a program
a Windows 10 window opens
choose default apps by file type (not protocol as I think that's what your did)
scroll down until you see .Sims3Pack
on the right it should say Sims3Launcher - if not
click on the right and set to Sims3Launcher
it said look like .Sims3Pack Sims3Launcher

mate, i specifically said that i searched in all 3 default app categories - the entry in "choose by file type" for .Sims3Pack simply doesnt exists.
EDIT: i managed to add launcher as default app for .sims3pack - that changed nothing, downloading from the site still prompts me for an app to open "sims3.", i guess its just a windows10 thing.

Did you try downloading with a different browser?

holy *, i didnt think it might be browser sided since the download STARTED - but i was able to select an app to use the download link with in firefox! well, that was embarassingly simple. thanks for hint
