Disable snap to slot

I am finally trying my hand at really decorating my sims' home and have seen some nice build / speed build videos that show the builder freely manipulating objects to place them where they want.  I understand that holding the Alt key, especially in conjunction with MoveObjects On lets you place objects pretty much however you want them to... except when it comes to placing items on top of other items such as tables, desks, counters, shelves, etc.

When I asked somewhere else I was told to try the disableSnappingToSlotsOnAlt command (which is listed under the help command as a valid command) but that just drops the item to the floor the moment I use the Alt key and will not let me place the item on the table (or whatever), only under (or inside) it.  At that point I was told to use the M key to snap it to a slot... but that has to be done without the Alt key pressed and since I did not want it snapped to a slot in the first place, I personally find that line of thinking pointless (unless they forgot something as they admitted they had not actually done any building in a long time).  I was also pointed in the direction of the One More Slot Please mod, but if at all possible I would like to do this without adding another mod.

In the end what I am asking is:

  • Is there a valid way to freely move objects on top of other objects such as desks, tables, shelves, etc. without the use of mods?
  • If so what am I missing?

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.
