Games defaults to desk top screen no matter what action i click on

I am using a windows 8 computer operating system. I am currently in the create a sim mode and cannot get through that phase because the screen keeps minimizing the game screen and taking me to the desk top screen. For example, I click on gender and it minimized the game and took me to desk top. It is not closing the game as the icon is right on the bottom and once i click on it it opens up back the game promptly. I then click to select the age range and again it took me to the desk top screen again. How can i fix this issue? I cannot enjoy playing the game. Please help!
