crinrict I think it was caused by custom content. I also had a bug where when I would try to switch families I could click on to the edit town but then from there I could not select any family. I don't think I have any mods ( mostly because I don't know how to use them) I did have a few sims from the exchange with custom skins. I just removed all of my custom content (except sim store items) and now my game is running fine.
