Have original sims how do I upgrade?

thats sims 2  right ? if you mean can you upgrade that  to sims 3  then no sims 3 is a separate game although still a sims game it's a game in it's own right and has it's own sims 3 base game which is  needed to add sims 3  expansion and or sims 3  stuff pack , (if i'm misunderstanding please feel free to elaborate )
