[MAC] Sims 3 Generations Installation problem. Select destination; can't find base game file.

I originally bought the sims 3 plus late night expansion cd, and it's been working fine for a long time. I just bought and downloaded the Generations expansion from amazon, but as soon as I try to install it and choose the destination to install it to, this message comes up:

"To install The Sims™ 3 Generations you must already have The Sims™ 3 installed. Select a volume where the The Sims3.app is already installed"

I have sims 3 installed already, I have the most recent update and everything, and I've tried choosing the hard drive as the install destination, as well as the parent folder and even subfolders that my sims 3 files are in. I have a Mac, version 10.8.1. Please help me!

    I think I actually figured it out! When browsing for the location to place the install, I clicked the bar at the top of the window that said mstanford (my name), and from the drop down I chose Macintosh HD instead. I had to choose the hard drive like I always do, but this time I had to choose it through browsing. Weird stuff.

    How was the base game and late night bought ?

    Also through Amazon or do you have the disk ?

    I just downloaded the Sims 3 Generations MAC download and I am having the same problem, except I purchased the download from Amazon.  It is installed, however I get this "select a volume where the Sims 3 is already installed."  I select the hard drive (even through browse) and It get an error msg:  "To install the Sims 3 Generations you must already have the Sims 3 installed."  What do I do to resove this please?  Please copy your answer to my email at [edit: email address removed]   Thank you

    This is an open public forum and private information is not allowed. Do you have the base game installed? Where did you purchase your games?

    Im having the same problem! with my sims 3 university life! its urgent i need help!! ive been trying multiple times dragging the sims 3 baase game into folders. and it still wont work! many people had this problem thats been resolved but none of the answers help!! please help me!! plus i have a mac

    I was receiving the same notification, but I had to use a different solution. I simply hadn't saved The Sims 3 base game as an application, and was instead saved as a download. I had the icon on my desktop, went into Finder, and dragged and dropped the icon from my desktop into my applications. This might help others looking for an answer, and save them the time of re-installing everything.
