Do you have iCloud set to automatically sync the contents of Documents to cloud storage? If so, please undo this setting. You can still manually move folders to your iCloud drive, but the auto sync feature has been causing problems lately, albeit mostly for Sims 4. Here's a guide, in case you need it:

If this isn't the issue, please go into Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3, open the file labeled deviceconfig.log, and past the first 40 or so lines (up to where the "Options" section starts) into a post here. You can delete the user and computer names, about 25 lines down, but nothing else is identifying information. This will show what the game makes of your hardware.
Please also take a screenshot of the error message you're getting and attach it to a post.
This just happened trying to load sims 3if that's any help
