[PC] The Sims 3 - Technical issue - Black screen @ start up

Hi,

I have an issue with the Sims 3, where I start up the game and just get a black screen.

The issue occurred after I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, prior to the upgrade everything worked perfectly. After a lot of troubleshooting I came to the conclusion that the upgrade to Win 10 was the issue, so I moved back to Win 8.1. The issue still persisted after the downgrade though.

Current specs:

Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Language: Swedish
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 840M

After a lot of troubleshooting I decided to reset my PC, much like a reformat but keeping my personal files.

Troubleshooting tried before reset of PC:

  1. Upgraded GPU drivers. (both intel and nvidia)
  2. Deleted cache files
  3. Used super patcher
  4. Ran Ccleaner
  5. Tried a clean boot

Troubleshooting done after reset of PC:

  1.  Upgraded GPU drivers. (both intel and nvidia)
  2.  Re-installed Origin
  3.  Re-installed Game
  4.  Changed the .ini to not play the game in full screen. (This made it so that only 2/3 of the screen is now black instead of the full screen.)
  5.  Reinstalled VC++ 2005 redist. Not sure if it went through 100% as the installation bar just comes up for like 2 seconds. I cannot install the 2008 - 2013 VC++ updates because of and error saying I don't have the base files needed to install them.
  6. Clear the documents folder to create a new Sims 3 folder there.

The issue still persists.

Does anyone have any thoughts on where the issue could be? It's driving me crazy and I really want to play the game again ☹️

  • Since you have a dual graphics system, did you make sure that the game runs on the card and not the chip ?
