Re: Game Crashed Mid-Save, Can I Recover It- Sims 3 for Mac

@kaitiejean wrote:

I had just moved my Sim to a new town and built a brand new house from the ground up. It took about 12 hours. Because I was building I only entered "Live Mode" once or twice to chck the look of things, didn't really interact with my Sim at all. Once I was done I hit save and during the save the game crashed. I saw online that you can go into your documents and grab the back up file. However, there wasn't one for that game. I don't think there is an automatic back up because my Sim never really performed any actions, it was just me building. Is there maybe another way to recover it? I put a ton of work into it (obviously) and don't want to have to re-do it all if I dont have to. There was a TON of custom content.

Thanks!

Hi

You mention that there is no .backup file in Saves but is there a normal save file? If not then I don't think there's anything you can do, unfortunately. If there are any save files ending .bad then they are corrupt files and must be deleted. I would normally recommend saving at least every half hour even if just building and always use "save" rather than combined "save and quit". Also purge your RAM before saving to improve the chance of it saving without crashing due to memory over-use. See tips below for further info and links.

Tips for Mac simmers

Unfortunately a lot of TS3 players encounter problems when playing the game on their Mac. These can include crashing and freezing. A lot of these issues can be avoided or at least improved by the following measures.

Firstly, manually reset your RAM while playing. See BluebellFlora's guide on how to do this: http://bluebellflora.com/the-sims-3-on-a-mac/resetting-ram-during-gameplay/

I restart my computer before I play TS3. Close down other things that are running in the background. The memory used as seen in Activity Monitor is at about 3GB after the restart. If I open the Launcher it goes up to around 11 GB (that's all I've done - just opened the Launcher!). At this point I reset the RAM. Then I hit play and get through the opening sequence. I then press cmd-return to put the game in windowed mode from time to time while playing (and always before saving or using CAS). That way I can keep an eye on the memory and reset RAM if necessary. Being in windowed mode also allows you to close the game using force quit if it freezes up - it's better to crash the game than your whole computer.

Second tip is to save frequently. I save at least once per sim day. Use the option to Save or Save As, rather than the combined Save and Quit.

Make sure you are patched up to date. The 1.63 patch included fixes for Mac simmers that did actually improve the stability of the game on our operating systems, so it is well worth updating to at least that level. The current patch is 1.67.

The game runs better if you switch off the memories system and disable the in-game Store and social features.

    Thanks! There is not a file for this game at all, normal, back up, corrupt... none. So I think I'm screwed. LOL. I guess the first rule of doing anything on a computer is to save frequently, so fail on my part. I close all backgroud apps but I will try purging the RAM. Thanks for the insight! 🙂

    Yeah, purging RAM and saving more frequently should help. It's a shame about the save file though! Hopefully you will enjoy re-doing it. Have fun!
