When does it say that ? On the installation process in the beginning or are you trying to re-register ?
You should be able to reinstall the game several times with the same code but you only need to register once.
Many report similar issue but it doesn't seem to work the same way it did for me anymore, it would be great if you could describe step-by-step what you're doing and where you get the error. Screenshots would be great (you need to upload them to some third party image sharing site and then put the link here)

We are trying to reinstall the software, so have put the disk in again and input the code when the prompt asks, then we get the error message "the code has already been used" . Playing the game appears to be contingent on the disk, and not on the fact that we have registered.......?

That is so weird. I really don't know how it works anymore since the started with that Origin requirement.
Try closing Origin and see how far you get then.
