Which one are you talking about the remote control LTR? That one is I believe in the individual sims inventory and does not go to household inventory.
Or are you talking about the big porthole that takes you to the future? That is in transportation.

or the time machine from inventing ? if you have ambitions expansion pack installed if your sim invented one it goes to the family inventory ( in buy mode ) go to that one and place on the lot
for the into the future one if you have that expansion pack installed then if there is enough room on your lot one appears there if not enough room on the lot it will appear somewhere in the world your playing in
