It's any kind of corruption in the game that causes this issue.

You might find some solutions going through this link: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Game-Corruption/m-p/968290/ but most of the time, there's not much one can do short of using a mod to fix (but we can't really talk about that solution on here)
