sounds like something is blocking the sims pathway first try the reset sim cheat

ctrl+shift+c hold all 3 together in the menu bar that appears at the top of the screen type resetsim first name last (of your sim ) hit enter for example my sim is named John Dear i type in resetsim John Dear

I did try that twice, unfortunately it didn't work, but thank you for the suggestion

if you switch to build/buy mode do you see any silver kinda of silver looking oval shapes on the floor  ?
