Re: The Sims 3 crashing and freezing

Your specs look good and thanks for the detailed info. Helps a lot.

Question though: Do you have also a chip in that computer or only the Nvidia card ? Is it a laptop or a desktop ? How much disc space do you have left ?

Does it just crash in CAS or in the game as well (use a pre-made Sim to find out) ?

    • Do you have also a chip in that computer or only the Nvidia card ?

Could you be more specific on this question? The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 is a graphics card and I am running my PC off of that and not the on board chip if that is what you are asking.

    • Is it a laptop or a desktop ?

    It is a desktop PC

    • How much disc space do you have left ?

    1.02 Terabytes

    • Does it just crash in CAS or in the game as well (use a pre-made Sim to find out) ?

It crashed first of all before I got to pick a premade Sim, then it crashed second time when tried running through the tutorial, then it crashed a third time when I set all the graphical options back to the lowest and put it in a window, then it crashed a 4th time when I also set up the compatability options again.

When it crashes, the screen turns black and I get the window pop up that tells me The Sims 3 has crashed and is checking for a solution.

    Thanks for all the details.

If you also have a chip on your motherboard, the game might have troubles recognizing the card itself (which is entirly the fault of the game)

    Here's a guide on that: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=481768

And here's how to check if it recognizes the card: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Getting_new_graphics_cards_recognized_by_the_game

If you are willing to try a third party tool, there's a tool called crash log analyzer (just google). It isn't a magic tool that helps solve all issues but it can give you some indication in which direction you should look.

I installed the Crash Log Analyzer and it turns out it did not recognize my graphics card. So I followed the guide to add it, though it was VERY complicated to understand, but I did it and from the guide it appears I now have The Sims 3 recognizing my graphics card.

The only problem now is that the Crash Log Analyzer is telling me I need to have 4 GB of RAM when I have 8 installed... any ideas?

    Is it still crashing ?

Your system is 64 bit, right ? It just means that the game has used up all memory but there's not much one can do about it since Sims is only a 32 bit application.

Did you ever actually got to play the game ?

Yes this is a 64 bit version of Windows.

Did you ever actually got to play the game ?

Yes, but again like before only about 5 minutes before it crashed.

Can you choose copy to clipboard in the crash log analyzer and post the whole thing ?

I turned the autonomy settings down but it still crashed.

Acording to the guide you sent me to follow last night I can confirm that my game recognizes my card if that guide is correct.

I still don't understand how I can be out of memory if The Sims 3 needs 4GiB but I have 8GiB, twice as much as is needed. It must be a problem with this game as my computer and all other games on my PC recongizes that I have 8GiB of memory. Is there a way to allocate memory to The Sims or do I need to turn off other settings?

The game is a 32 bit application and as such cannot use more than 4 GB of the 8 GB you have. You can as much RAM as you like, the game will never be able to use more than 4 GB (unless EA decides to make a 64 bit version which most probably ain't going to happen).

Did you try this: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps/td-p/714/ to see if that helps ?

Something is eating up your RAM. On a new game, it shouldn't use that much. It should be around 1.2 - 1.4 GB.

What town are you playing in ?

I am playing on SunSet Valley right now and I have included a screenshot of my Task Manager's performance tab when it's running The Sims. It doesn't look like anything is eating up my RAM.

I will try to restore factory settings now and reply back on how it goes.

It would appear the issues has been fixed. Been playing The Sims since 09:21PM to 7:08AM (taking breaks during of course) and I've not run into a single error.

So thank you for all the help you've given in dealing with this frustrating issue.

I do have one last question though. To be safe, I chose to not install a store content patch when I ran The Sims... could that also be a cause to the problem?

Don't think that has anything to do with it. I would guess that the game is finally recognizing your card ok.

As for the task monitor, check the process tab and see how much RAM the ts3w.exe process uses. The picture you're posted is just the overall usage which does take the whole 8 GB into account since the operating system is 64 bit.

If your issue is solved, please accept a solution. XP is also appreciated 🙂

Also yeah, it might've just needed to have that folder reset. Thank you very much for your help.
