Relationship bar goes down then freezes

The last couple weeks I've noticed that when my 2nd gen sim moves out and asks his/her partner to move in, after a bit the relationship bar goes down and freezes where it is. The bar going down in it of itself didn't make much sense to me because my sims talk everyday, but when I went to spend time on building their relationship, the bar never moved. I've tried everything, I've reset both sims, I've tried restarting the game, deleted and started a new save 3 times (each in a different town), moving the partner out then back in, switching households, EVERYTHING. I even tried uninstalling the Showtime add on as I've read it's a glitch from that, but even after it still happens. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions that I may have missed?

  • @Hls2323  I've played with evil sims on occasion and haven't seen this issue at all.  There's a relationship dip from the Emperor of Evil aura, sometimes, but it's a one-time hit, on part with a negative social interaction, not an inability to gain relationships past a certain level.

If you do want to test this theory anyway, you could remove the Evil trait from the sim without mods.  Open the cheats console (ctrl-shift-C) and enter testingcheatsenabled true .  Then shift-click the sim and select "Modify in Create a Sim."  (Please note that this doesn't work on pregnant sims.)  Replace Evil with something else, then go to Edit Town and evict the sims from their house and put them back.  This will remove promised wishes and opportunities, but that doesn't matter for the purposes of this test.

I still think the Long Distance Friend LTR might be the culprit, if the sim is being added to new saves with it still applied.  But there's no way to remove it from an existing sim without mods.  If you don't want to use mods, I'd be willing to look at your save or your sims.  Let me know if you're interested in uploading either the save or the Library copy of the sims you place in new saves.

  • @Hls2323  Does either of these sims have the Long Distance Friend lifetime reward?  I don't know whether it works properly on romantic relationships.  These are supposed to decline even if a sim's friendships do not, for example if they have Long Distance Friend or have completed the Super Friendly challenge from the Charisma skill.

Let me know about the reward, and also let me know whether you use mods and which ones.  If not, are you willing to add a few, temporarily or otherwise, to try to troubleshoot the problem?

I appreciate the help either way, my female sim has the Long distance, not her fiancee. And no I don't have any mods, I've had them before and it always freezes up my PC. I don't know why I didn't think of troubleshooting, I thought it was the same as 'Repair' when in the EA app (which I have done), dumb ish question but how would I go about troubleshooting?

@puzzlezaddict I'm not sure if this has to do with it, but I got the sim her fiancee from the "Sim finder app" interaction, I'm not to sure if that's a factor because I did that for my original/her parents and their relationship was fine.

@Hls2323  I think the problem might be the long-distance friend LTR.  Only one sim needs to have it for it to potentially affect their relationship.

Just to be sure, when you said you tried a different save, do you mean you saved these sims to the library and placed them in a new save, quitting to desktop and reloading after saving them and before loading the new save?  I ask because that is a powerful reset that should have taken care of the issue.

If it didn't help, then the only other suggestions I can think of involve mods.  I can recommend some that wouldn't do any damage, and would almost certainly help keep your save in good working order, but that are also removable if you'd like.  Specifically, NRaas MasterController, with its MC Cheats add-on, offers the commands you'd want to try, and ErrorTrap and Overwatch clean up stray data and corruption in general.  ET and OW do their job in the background, without any need for user interference; MC doesn't do anything at all unless you use it to issue a command.  You can find more info on all three as well as download links here:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/Sims-3-Common-Game-Fixing-Mods-Hero-Approved/m-p/9838855#M244208

Please also read the guide to installing mods linked at the top of the post.

If you're willing to try, run an MC Reset on each sim: click on the sim and select NRaas > MasterController > Advanced Reset Sim.  If that doesn't help, you can try removing the long-distance friend reward (MC > Advanced > Traits > Drop Rewards).  An alternative is to change the sims' relationship type or level: click on one of them and select NRaas > MC > Intermediate > Long-term Relationship: by Category/Value, choose the other sim, and pick a different category or value.  The category is the type of relationship, for example you could set them to strangers and then back to engaged; the value is the number that isn't changing.

Each time you try one of these, let the game clock run for a few sim-minutes afterward, then use "save as" to rename the save, so the original remains intact as a backup.  Quit, delete the five cache files in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, reload, and test.  For reference, these are the cache files:

    • CASPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package

Again, ET, OW, and MC are all entirely removable, and they're also very helpful in general.  I would never play without them, but if you'd like to get rid of them after fixing this issue, that's your choice.

@puzzlezaddict Apologies, I'll clear that up...By the the '3 separate saves each in a different world', basically I deleted that save file/world, and start a new one 3 times.

Something else I'm wondering as to why is happening is that each time, I chose this sim to be evil and found a partner to be evil too (wanted to try the criminal career), I'm still not too sure, .but I tested this by getting her to have a child, and I've noticed that she can't gain anything with the kid. Again, not sure but I know that evil sims take a larger reputation dip than most (just confused since both have this trait)

@puzzlezaddict thank you! What I ended up doing was uninstalling and reinstalling the game, because I went through files on my desktop for the game and noticed that the the previous saves were still there, and there might've been an error in overiding (if that's not the case, it's error nontheless). I ended up installing a couple of the mods you recommended too, so far so good. I know it's a bit of an intense ish reaction, but hey if it works it works.

I am having an issue with making my game go fullscreen on my pc, but I'll make a seperate post since that's kind of a minor issue.

    Thank you for the help!!
