Should I update my base game first to 1.42 before installing Supernatural?

Okay, i have been at this install/uninstall trial and error for days. Basically, I just want to play my Supernatural game but my computer (Mac) is giving me a whole lot of problems. So, okay, I installed the DVD version of The Sims 3 base game and updated it. It is now on version 1.22. I then installed Supernatural. When I tried to play it, it just said "Service Initialization Failure 0x0ef...". The fixes I found did not work and the console read something like this:

So, I don't really know what that means but I'm guessing something to do with the patch... It went from 1.22 to 1.38... I don't know if that's okay... So i had to completely uninstall and reinstall the base game and patch it to 1.22 again (and it is working fine by the way). Now the question is, should I install Supernatural then patch it to 1.42 or can i just update my base game to 1.42 before installing Supernatural? 

Sorry for the looooong post but I am really just up to my knees trying to make my game work. I tried downloading the cumulative patch from the forum and it doesn't work, "Ipatcher quit unexpectedly" so I don't know if doing the manual patch will work. 

If anybody could help me out I would very much appreciate it!
