Sims 3 64-bit Interacting with other households

I installed the Sims 3 64-bit when it came out, and many issues I've run into so far I've been able to resolve with help from other topics, but I haven't seen anyone run into this same problem.

My self-made sims can interact with 'npc'-sims in town without any issues, but I've wanted to make another self-made sim in the same town so both my self-made sims could interact. However, any time I try to go to the other sim's house and interact, the game crashes. The first time I tried it, the game crashed as soon as I clicked on the other sim's house to see options to visit it. The second time, I could go there and my other sim came out the door and they noticed each other, but as soon as they tried to start talking (automatically, I hadn't clicked any options yet), the game crashed again. So I can't have two self-made households interact with each other at all, apparently.

Any suggestions on how to fix it? Or is it a bug that can be fixed by EA?

Thanks!

  • @lucadullaart  This doesn't sound like a bug so much as some save corruption.  Try evicting the other sim, the one you're not currently playing, and putting them back in their house.  If that doesn't help, evict them and put them in a different house.

I'd also be curious to know whether you can play with the other sim, and if so, whether that sim can interact with the one you're playing with now.

After each test, empty out the contents of the CurrentGame folder in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, and delete the five cache files as well, in the same location.  For reference, the cache files are:

    • CASPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package

Hi, thank so much for your reply!

I've tried all of those things, making sure that I deleted the files in between tries,  sadly none of it worked. I tried to change the active household to see if they could interact that way, but as soon as I try to make my other sim the active household, the game crashes again. Basically it only lets me play the original household I made for that gamesave.

Any more suggestions, maybe? Could I try to make two active households in a new game and see if it works there?

    Again, thanks so much.

Ok so I have just made a new test game in a new city and made two custom households, and they have no trouble interacting!

So you were right, it was a problem with the save. So do you have any other suggestions to fix it within the game I had been playing? I had already been playing with the first household I made for a long time and taught my sim many skills and built many relationships, so it would be a shame if I would have to start that over...

Just to update with all I've tried so far in case you reply:

I've also tried to make a completely new game, and place a copy of both households there, the exact same thing keeps happening unfortunately... as soon as I even view the other sim's house, the game crashes.

Ok so at this point I'm talking to myself, haha, but I think I've figured it out. There's just something wrong with one of the households for some reason, because I put just that one household in a completely new game with no other custom households, and it crashed as soon as I tried to play. I will just re-make that household (it's not the one I had made progress in yet, luckily) and see if it works then, if not I hope I can get back to you haha! Thanks again!

@lucadullaart  Sorry, I was busy today and hadn't had time to visit this forum.  But your tests more or less followed the suggestions I'd have made, so I wouldn't have been contributing much anyway, other than to ask if you wanted to try a mod-related fix.

I don't know how or why the sim became corrupted, and it's usually impossible to tell unless someone remembers doing one of a few specific things that would be likely to cause a problem.  (One example is playing a sim that had been exposed to a pack that's no longer in your game.)  But at least you shouldn't have the same issue the second time around, since you're remaking the sim presumably from scratch.

If you do have any issues with the new version of this sim, let me know, and we can pick up where you left off.
