Sims 3 base game not compatible with expansion packs

I've had The Sims 3 for a while but bc my computer kept crashing with it I uninstalled it a few years ago. Now I want to play again so I downloaded the base game and also the one expansion pack I have Ambitions. The message popped up that the base game was not compatible with expansion pack and to update with sims launcher, however it wouldn't let me click anything on the launcher. So I uninstalled both games, reinstalled base game. Now it let me update or so it says bc it still says update available even though I went through the process already. I can play the base game but as soon as I try to install epacks it won't let me do anything. I had to uninstall both games and reinstall base game so I could just play that. My version says 1.0.631.00001, which looks like the right version according to the update but it's not cooperating. It still says I need to update to version 1.63.5.0240xx, I need help!!! When I update it doesn't update!
