No problem on the detailed report; I figured it might help someone if they run into the same thing.
I just checked. My system has been running sluggishly so I restarted but it made no difference to Origin. Launcher works, nothing else. However, taking your advice and running Origin as an administrator worked beautifully! I'm no expert but I assume the launcher and game are inheriting Origin's admin rights. So that works nicely. I suppose an easy fix for the particular issue I encountered would be to set Origin to always run with admin privileges.
Quitting Origin and restarting without admin privileges also replicates the problem so it's definitely an admin rights issue. Setting the .exe itself to start as an admin each time fixes it.
If anyone isn't sure how to do that here's how on Windows 8.x (though it's the same in 7 and Vista as far as I recall):
- Navigate to the Origin install directory (mine is D:/Games/Origin but yours will depend on where you installed the client)
- Find the file titled Origin.exe
- Right-click it and select 'Properties'
- Go to the 'Compatibility' tab up the top.
- Under 'Settings' you'll likely see a few things about Reduced colour mode, 640x480 resolution and so on. Ignore those. You're looking for a check box labelled 'Run this program as an administrator'.
- Check that box and hit OK (or Apply).
Now every time you start the Origin client it'll ask for admin privileges - some people find that pretty annoying but I consider it a small price to pay for a working game.
Wow. The base game only runs through Origin now? If I was in that position I'm not sure if I'd have worked this fix out... :manfrustrated:
