Ria-leaf Try playing with your computer offline. You can sign into the EA App, then disable wifi before pressing Play.
If that doesn't help, please let me know whether you use an antivirus, a VPN, or some kind of cleaner app. Please also let me know whether Sims 4 works, if you happen to have it installed. You don't need to download it, but if it's already present, it would be useful to know how it runs.

Hi puzzlezaddict, thank you for the recommendations. Unfortunately, the same thing is happening even when trying to play offline.
I have Microsoft Defender on my laptop, but it doesn't seem to identify any of the game files as threats, and even when I exclude them from scanning the same thing happens.
Unfortunately I haven't got Sims 4 installed, so I can't test that.
