Sims 3 not launching

Hello! I have sims 3 on steam and have gotten a new laptop in the past year, and now my game won't open. I have windows 11, and a 2025 asus gaming laptop.

It opens the launcher, but when I click play, nothing happens. Steam shows that it is still running. I have tried the following:

  • going in files and running as administrator
  • Changing cpu to either 1 or 0
  • Checking net framework 3.5 in control panel (which is still checked)
  • The lazy duchess mod, which I later deleted

I have gotten the game to launch 1 time, and it immediately popped up with an error. After that I repaired my game through steam, and now I cant get it to open again. I don't remember what I had done to get it to play, either. I feel like I have read every thread forum, ever reddit post, and every Google ai summary, and YouTube videos only show changing the CPU. I feel stuck, and I just want to play Sims 3 again!

  • rdohman  This does sound like it might be the Alder Lake issue.  Did you change the CPU affinity for TS3W.exe, with the W?  That's the correct executable for a Steam install.

If that's what you're already doing that hasn't helped, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

If you tried the Alder Lake patch, repairing the game through Steam would have undone the effects.  I'm not saying you need to try it again (yet); it's just something to be aware of.

Please also let me know what error you saw when you briefly got the game to work the one time.
