sims 3 will not load no matter what i try

hello!

about a month ago, i had thrifted a copy of the sims 3 (2009 disc) which came with everything, including the key to register the game, but obviously it had already been used. i have an external cd drive, so i'm 100% okay with only using the disc. however, my issue is my game will not load past the launcher. i press 'play', and my cursor shows it's loading for a few seconds before it stops completely. my game had been working completely fine the first week or so, and now i can't play. when i have task manager processes pulled up and i try to press 'play', i can see the actual sims 3 game show up for a second before werfault.exe shows up, then both quickly close out and that's it.

i have been trying to fix this for a while now. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, the alder lake patch, setting affinity, and anything else that has been recommended in these forums or elsewhere on the internet, but nothing works. i genuinely don't know what else to do, or if i'm wasting time trying to fix something that might not work anymore.

i'd really appreciate some help, but if there is no fixing this, i understand. thank you!

    diggyhall​  Have you tried removing or renaming the Sims 3 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts yet?  If not, please try that now.  This would remove, but not delete, your saves and other user content, the idea being that you find out whether the game works with none of your existing content.

    If that doesn't help, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
