the sims 3 wont let me click start

I got The Sims 3 like maybe 5 months ago and the first time I tried to play it, I couldn't click the check mark to start the game. I thought it was just a glitch or something so I tried again the following week and it did the same thing. I really want to play, but I can't get past that screen. I got The Sims 3 Starter Pack that comes with the Late Night expansion pack and The High-End Loft Stuff pack. I'm gonna attach a photo of what screen I keep getting stuck on.

  • @Cuhhhree  Sorry that no one responded to you sooner; this post was just moved to the Sims 3 section a few minutes ago.

If you'd still like help, please run a dxdiag and attach the results to a post here (use the Browse button).  There are plenty of reasons why TS3 could be acting up, and the info in the dxdiag will help narrow things down.

If you happen to be on a mac, please provide your specs, as described in this post:

No worries about the time, thanks for responding at all. Here's diagnostics. Also I'm new to the ea answers website so I was a bit unsure of what browse button you meant.

@Cuhhhree  I see a Browse button below the text field when I'm typing a reply; it's next to a paper clip icon.  But it doesn't matter—you clearly had no trouble attaching the dxdiag.

I can see why you'd have so much trouble running TS3.  Your computer's specs are pretty underpowered—you have only 4 GB RAM and a weak integrated graphics card.  Still, you may be able to run the base game and the two packs you've installed.  (Late Night is relatively mild, and none of the stuff packs add much to overhead.)  TS3's requirements aren't all that high by current gaming standards, but it doesn't adjust well to lower specs.

Your best bet here is if you make sure your computer is only running the game, and nothing else.  It's also a good idea to trash the TS4 game folder in Documents\Electronic Arts, since it's always possible that you have a corrupt file in there somewhere.  Then, right before you want to play, restart your computer; this will free up as much RAM as possible.  Don't open any other apps, not even a browser window.  Sign into Origin and then put it in offline mode, and disconnect your computer from the internet.  Then launch TS3.

When you get to the Main Menu, before pressing play, go into game options and turn off memories, the in-game shopping experience, and the hidden object interactive loading screens.  All of these increase the RAM load on the game.  Then press play.  If it doesn't work, repeat the same process (starting with rebooting your computer), but when you get to the Main Menu, turn all your graphics settings to low and quit, reboot, and launch the game again.

If you can play, you can probably turn some graphics options back up, although leave water and high detail lots at the minimum settings.  (These take more resources than the other settings.)  And make sure to only change graphics settings at the Main Menu, then quit and relaunch the game, or else you'll see some very strange graphics glitches.

Again, I'm not sure that your computer can run TS3 at all, unfortunately, but this is your best shot.  It's really too bad that the game handles weaker systems so poorly, but there's not a lot that can be done about it.

I’m replying off of my phone now, but i’ve changed the game options the way you told me to as far as the interactive loading screens, memories, etc. But I can’t click the check mark. It seems like if I try to change one of the actual settings all i have to do is position the mouse at the left of the option and I can change it, but the check mark will not let me click it.

After playing around with it for a minute i was able to click on it and now my game is loading, thanks for your help!

  • I’m having the same issue! I followed what was suggested but still I have to move the arrow to the far left of buttons to actually click them ... I can’t click directly. How did you fix it ?

@Kwiggins101  Please describe your issue in more detail, as in, which buttons are affected, is it all the time, etc.  Please also let me know whether your computer runs Windows or macOS, and what kind of install this is: Origin, disc, Steam, or something else.

Hi I’m sorry I didn’t update sooner, actually you won’t believe how easy it was to fix. A couple of days ago I deleted my entire sims 4 folder ( of course I moved my mods, saves and tray files to backup folders) and as I proceeded to test the sims 4 without adding my mods back in, it was like brand new. All the game settings were reset since I deleted my old folder. It actually does the same thing in the sims 4, you have to click to the left of whatever buttons you’re trying to press. I fixed this issue in the sims 4 by setting my screen to windowed fullscreen. After doing so on the sims 4 I decided to try it  on the sims 3, and voila it worked. What you want to do is load your sims 3 game up and go to options menu, then options, and screen settings. uncheck “enable fullscreen mode.” My screen is set to 1366 x 768, I suggest you try that first if you don’t like it then choose from the other options as desired. It works perfectly fine for me now, no more clicking to the left. I can click directly on everything. This was such an easy fix!
