I should have listed that....
MS Security Essentials. I have tried turning off real-time protection.
Follow rums instructions above abut DEP see if that works. Your computer shoud more than play the game and I have one similar only with Nvidia and I dont have the issue you are having with the 1.67 patch. The only other thing I can think of the base game needs to be patched to 1.67 before adding eps. Your also using disc and since they added origin the disc have issues and its better to play with your download versions which you get free if you registered your discs. Im playing all downloads and not having issue. And windows 7 is supported so you should not have to run in compatibility mode. Im on windows 8 and dont have to run in compatibiltiy mode.
with your anti virus Just making sure you dont have bitdefender. Bitdefender and this game do not mix

Forgot to ask since you mentioned Steam are your sims games from Steam or EA/Origin?

wait is the base game on steam ? and your trying to play disk version of the game with your steam one ? steam versions of the game only work with steam, origin and disks do not work together, only origin and disks work together, if your base game is on steam then you can get the code from steam redeem it in your origin account you'll need to uninstall the steam version of the game though

Well, the DEP settings are at Win 7 defaults like I mentioned earlier. I had heard elsewhere to change it- tried it and then switched back.
I haven't registered my discs- I had no idea that was a thing so I'll give it a go. Will post back with results.
I'm still leaning heavily toward the patch not liking my eyefinity, but googling doesn't turn up any other similar complaints.

Discs were retail (I think from Target). No bitdefender on my system.

One of the other helpers may know the answer about eyefinity and can post back to you on that. You need to register your disc with Origin and then download the origin client https://www.origin.com/en-us/download .Open orgin client at desktop and download versions of your games should be there. If you do the download versions, you have to delete all the disc versions and get the disc version off your registry before installing the downloads. You then download the base game let it patch to 1.67 and then add eps but if you think there is a conflict with eyefinity you will know after the base game patches to 1.67 before installing ep's.
If registering your discs some how does not work you would have to contact EA for them to fix your account with registery issues.
