Unable to Launch Sims 3 Create-A-World

When attempting to launch Sims 3 Create-A-World it says:

"The Sims 3 Create a World Tool - Beta has crashed!

Exception information:

Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."

I believe this is because of the EA App but I hope I'm wrong :/ I've tried running CAW, The Sims 3 and the EA App as admins and disabling EAs admin but nothing has worked. Please fix this, I want to get back to making worlds!

Windows 11 (Laptop)

Running via EA and the XBOX app (I was unable to redownload Origin)

You're getting this error because you have to use a specific version of CAW for whichever patch level of Sims 3 you have installed.

So, if you have patch level 1.67, you have to use the 1.67 version of CAW. If you have patch level 1.69, you have to use the 1.69 version. You can see what patch level you are on when the TS3 launcher opens. Look in the bottom left corner, under all the buttons.

Also, make sure that you're downloading a copy off the official Sims 3 site, not Internet Archive or some other place.  Some of those copies are either no good or mislabeled, so that people who have patch 1.67 are downloading 1.69 versions of CAW and vice versa:

If you're having problems downloading via the Edge Browser, then use a different browser (like Firefox or Opera), or in Edge, look for three dots next to the download, click on them, and choose "Keep."

With that being said, you won't be able to use a feature of CAW called Edit in Game using EA App at the moment. So, if all you want to do right now is play around in CAW and learn the ropes, that's fine. But at the time of this writing, if you want to use Edit in Game, you'll have to do one of the following:

    1. Go back to Origin and use a hack to keep it from being updated: https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/Why-am-I-getting-forced-to-install-EA-App/m-p/12331941#M137136
    2. Go back down to patch level 1.67 of The Sims (by reinstalling by disc, if you have them, and with a base game disc that isn't tied to Origin).
    3. Switch to Steam, but the problem is that you'd have to rebuy everything over there.

  • @hepandeerus  My understanding is that CAW itself does open correctly through the EA App, but Edit In-game does not.  (It also just opens the Sims 3 launcher rather than throwing an error.)  For the latter, there's currently no way around the issue.  So if your goal is to eventually use EIG, you're unfortunately out of luck unless you can revert to a disc or Steam install.

For the CAW issue itself, make sure you're running neither it nor the EA App as an admin and that there are no other apps running at the same time.  It can also be helpful to restart your computer immediately beforehand, simple as that is.

Heyo! Attempting to download the version of CAW compatible with my installed version of TS3 as you suggested, after the version I downloaded when I was probably 15yrs old and hadn't touched since crashed on start up, and was wondering if by

    "have problems downloading"

you were referring to something like this:
