"Unknown Error Occurred" After "Installing" Ambitions

Hey guys,

I was wondering if I could get some help because EA's Senior Support is being quite slow. Ok. I have a MacBook Pro 13" with OS X 10.8.4 and 8 GB of RAM. I have the base game, High End Loft, Generations, Town Life, Showtime, Diesel Stuff, Seasons, and University. I decided to buy Ambitions via digital download on Origin. Everything was going smoothly until I noticed that the Ambitions application was not in my application folder after installation. It wasn't installed in the transgaming files either. So, I just decided to click on the University application to see what it does and lo and behold a window pops up that says an "Unknown Error Occurred." This is the first game that has ever done this.

So, I have done some research and probably tried every trick in the book. Cleared out my preferences and transgaming files and reinstalled all of my games. Reinstalled in order and downloaded updates accordingly. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I am thinking something is happening during installation, but how would I know? I am so confused and frustrated at the same time. Please if anybody could help me it would be much appreciated!

Oh and on another note, my game is crashing very often. I can only get maybe an hour and half of game play before it crashes. I save constantly just in case of a crash. I run pretty low settings and I run smcFanControl running full blast when I am playing. If anybody can give me some advice on that, too, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • Have you tried following these steps: https://help.ea.com/article/how-do-i-manually-remove-a-game-from-my-games-on-origin-using-mac

Origin has a habit of saying games are installed properly when they are not on Macs.

Also, have you used the SuperPatch for your game? The last patch didn't work very well for people when they tried to use the launcher.  Check what patch your base game is following these instructions...go to your Sims folder under Documents and open up the text file "Version.tag."  (You can open this file with the application "TextEdit" if it asks you to choose one.)  What number does it list? If it doesn't start with 1.50...you need to try patching manually. Here is a post where you can find the link to the SuperPatch for Macs: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/549552.page.  Once you've used the SuperPatch you don't have to worry about updating each of the EPs separtely.

See if any of these things helps.  Let me know how it goes.  🙂

Thanks for the response! I just completely removed the installers and I am going to redownload Ambitions from Origin. The cache file that was mentioned in your link was not there, but we will see how everything goes once I redownload Ambitions. I really do think they gave me a bad version of the game, if that is possible...

Also for the Super Patch, I did manual install it earlier last week and it did not work. I downloaded and installed the 1.50.56.021017 patch when I had just the base game installed. I tried updating via the launcher to the lastest patch when I just had the base game installed, but it would download.Do you think I should install the base game and Ambitions then install the manual patch I mentioned earlier?

I looked for a patch that I could manually installed for Ambitions because I know they changed the setup on how they install patches after Generations, but it would not install because I had to open the launcher.  I will wait until I redownload Ambitions and give you an update on how everything goes. Sorry if this all sounds confusing the way I word things. This is just hard to explain... 😕mileyindifferent:

Well... I just redownloaded Ambitions, I clicked "Play" next to Ambitions in Origin, and it wanted me to download a patch. The first time downloading it, it said "Unknown Error Occurred," but the second time it downloaded all the way through and patched, but it still gave me the error after it patched and I tried to start the launcher. I am so frustrated!

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? The exact same thing is happening to me when installing ambitions. It also happens for Late Night.
