I've found a workaround, not ideal but it works. Select only one teen at a time to follow and then the other teens go to school but you can't see them and they can work normally or make friends etc. Then you play them on a rotational basis.
That's the solution I was thinking about, too. I've aged up my twins yesterday, so now I have three teenage Sims. However, only the older brother got all the tasks; his siblings tagged along and attended class, but that was about it. I had all three of them selected when the game prompted me to follow one, so maybe that's the problem. I'd rather be able to control all three of them while at school, but as long as this isn't fixed, maybe following just one of them is a good solution.

until they fix it I'll be doing that. While they are in the rabbit whole you can keep their grades up at least.
