Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Play a Sim for a while to have the new trait pop-up and agree. Earn the satisfaction points for a re-traiting potion and use. The Sim will only have the original three traits to change and upon returning to Live mode will no longer have the additional traits.
What happens when the bug occurs? My Sim started as Family Orientated, Erratic and Freegan. Through gameplay she gained Romantic and Loves the Outdoors. When I used a re-traiting potion I changed her to Family Orientated, Hotheaded, and Maker but lost Romantic and Loves the Outdoors.
What do you expect to see? I expected to see my three main traits changed and the newly added gameplay traits still there.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

I don't know if this is a bug or planned, but it makes the re-traiting potion frustrating. It takes some time to earn the satisfaction points meaning the Sim is quite likely to have developed other traits, but promptly loses them when changing the originals.

I just recently used the retraiting potion to reset one of my sims' base traits (made in CAS/ageing up naturally). While I was able to reset one of the base traits as expected, unfortunately all of the self discovery traits I had earned (two total) disappeared. As I was trying to earn them back, I got one of them back, but then it said that this was my max (as if the other two were still there). Is there a way for me to get the self-discovery traits again or is this the end of the line for me? I feel a little sad it did not warn me this would happen. I probably would have just stuck it out.
Do we know if this is part of the game or a bug?

having this problem too, used a trait remover potion on a sim with 2 self discovery traits and it removed them. hes been able to learn one but doesn't seem to be able to learn anymore. another sim lost all 3 discovery traits and cant seem to learn any at all now. its very frustrating as i liked the original discovery traits and only wanted to remove the CAS ones. now they cant learn any new traits because the games acting like they still have the discoveries for some reason.

I've experienced this issue as well. Also when reloading a saved household into a new save, if you remove any traits, in CAS, theoretically it should open up spaces for acquiring new self-discovery traits, just like it should if a retraiting potion is used. However, the game still treats it as though these sims have maxed out their self-discovery trait slots.
Via MCCC, I combed through all hidden traits and buffs for a sim I've had this issue with and found that a hidden trait does remain attached to the sim for "max self-discovery." So it appears that even when traits are removed by one method or another, this hidden trait/buff remains on the sim that prevents them from acquiring new traits through gameplay, even when they should have trait slots available.

FYI, I confirmed that removing this hidden trait (via MCCC) does enable the self-discovery events to occur for that sim again, so this is definitely the culprit.

It still happens to me too. My Sim here has 3 additional traits from the Discovery System and when she drinks the potion to change her main 3 traits the other 3 gets removed. This is so frustrating it's definitely a bug and not by design😞

What exactly is this trait called, do you recall? Cause I had two self-discovery traits, then I decided to swap Overachiever for Family-Oriented, but I was not aware of this bug... So now it seems all I can do is wait for that third self-discovery to pop-up, then re-trait again and remove the max discovery trait to start over.

EDIT: Ah duh! I just searched for it under add trait in MCC, so yea can now verify that it is trait_hidden_selfdiscoverymax for anyone else that wants to use MCCC to fix this bug.

This is definitely a bug. I will use mccc for the first time just to fix this. I wish ea would fix this.
edit: @absolutgrndzer0 can you tell me how to use it? if i use the pie menu i can find it under hidden traits. if its through the cheat console a what is the command?

This just happened to me the first time and it was really frustrating. I had all the three self-discovery traits and took the retrait potion and lost all the three additional ones. ☹️ Had no idea this would happen.

This didn't work for me. The pop-up said no matches found when I tried removing the hidden trait.
