This happens so often I've seen it as a running joke on reddit. My Sims often walk in on each other when one is on the toilet even though the kitchen sink is closer and clearly available.
This is happening constantly since 2014, the team can take every save I have ever sent.

Go to the "Plantsim's Home" in Brindleton Bay and watch my Sim Louis Hecking. I managed to conservate the very moment when he is heading to the sink upstairs with his dishes allthough two other sinks are nearby on the same floor. I didn't give the command to clear the table, he did it autonomously. Hope that helps!

@crinrict Are ya'll still needing saves where this is happening? I have 5 bathrooms, 2 upstairs, 3 downstairs and when they are in the furthest away upstairs bathroom they will queue up to go to the furthest away downstairs bathroom to wash hands, and vice versa when downstairs. I'll have them queued up to pee and shower and they'll take off for the opposite bathroom nearly every time.

This is happening to me as well and it’s infuriating. They also pause for some time, laugh a bit and then end up not washing. They just collect all of the dishes, then leave it on the floor somewhere. Causing the uncomfortable dirty surroundings moodlet.
Update: i am still having this problem, the first household it was occurring with, I rebuilt the house, then upon exiting build mode, I was not able to enter the house. The house appeared as if it was the next door neighbor’s house when I’m not on the lot. I moved them out and completely redid the lot in a different lot style. In the new house, it did not continue the whole “sim using bathroom sink to wash dishes” thing. BUT! Now it is happening in another save with a different family.
I was having this issue on ps4. I thought that the sink located in the bathroom being fully upgraded while the kitchen sink was base might be causing them to "prefer" the upgraded bathroom sink or something like that, so I fully upgraded the kitchen sink and they stopped using the bathroom sink immediately after. Could've been something else that sorted it out, but I thought I'd share in hopes it helps.
