[OPEN] [IL] Survey Ocean Wildlife from buoy doesn't clear job task

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.54.120.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? IL, RG, Grim's Ghoulish Guitar, Holiday Pack
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Have a Sim in the Marine Biologist track of the Conservationist career. Try to complete the job task "Survey Ocean Wildlife" from a buoy that displays the option.
What happens when the bug occurs? The sim snorkels around and completes the task to "survey", but the job task does not complete.
What do you expect to see? Either: Remove "Survey Ocean Wildlife" from the buoy menu (as this is not what the task bubble says to complete) -or- Completing the task "Survey Ocean Wildlife" from a buoy should clear the task
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Never used.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes
Please describe the patch or change you made. June 21, 2019 Island Living expansion pack launch

The Marine Biologist (Conservationist career) has a job task to "Survey Ocean Wildlife".  A button to "Survey Ocean Wildlife" is available on the snorkeling buoys. A sim can successfully complete the "Survey Ocean Wildlife" task at the buoy, but it does not complete the job task.

Hovering over the task, the info says to "Survey coral, schools of fish or sea turtles in the ocean of Mua Pel'am". Clicking on any of those items and completing the task to "Survey Ocean Wildlife" does clear the task.

Spoiler

I believe the intention was to have the task completed on the actual wildlife, and the choice on the buoys should be removed. Alternatively, enable the completion of the task on the buoy to clear the job task.

  • I had this too - clicking on the buoy tells her to survey the fish and coral and whatever else in that area, and she surveys it, and gets valuable research data - but then nothing happens career-wise. Also, clicking on the fishing signs, I get the answer that she found nothing interesting on the "go(ne) fish(ing) sign" when clicking on the sign *should* tell her to survey the fish, not the sign! I can't click on the fish or any wildlife or other features directly, I searched for ages. And submitting her research data sometimes helps her career performance, and sometimes doesn't. It's very inconsistent and annoying.

All this research and stuffing around takes up so much of her time she doesn't have time left to clean up the actual rubbish in Mua Pel'am any more, too. I feel like that should always be one of the daily tasks, so long as there is any rubbish in the area. I had another sim living there in a different save who wasn't employed as a Conservationist, and he just went around cleaning up every day, and he got the place looking better faster than my conservationist is doing!

  • This is still an issue. "Survey Ocean Wildlife" on the buoy doesn't clear the job task, and it really should. The only other option is to keep your Sim hanging around doing nothing for the entire Sim day, waiting for the survey option to become available on the coral, which sometimes it just doesn't before you're out of time and you get negative job performance and lose out on pay. Meanwhile your Sim is exhausted, hungry, and hasn't accomplished anything all day because you didn't want them to not be available to come survey if and when the option appeared.

Similar issue. There aren't any clickable coral, fish or turtles in Mua Pel'am at its current stage of restoration in my game, so the task is generally impossible to complete.

The option on the "Survey Ocean Wildlife" buoy doesn't actually work and it is unnecessarily placed there because it misleads the players.
This option is in a different place and it's not that easy to find and click on it because you have to click on a certain green fish.
How it works: You have to find garbage near this large island that is close to the reef. While your sim cleans up the garbage you are watching the reef. A small vortex will appear there and next to it two green fish. You need to click on such a fish and you will have the option "Survey Ocean Wildlife "
Additionally, it only starts to work when you see the picture with the information that the environment is already partially starting to return to normal.
To make it harder to do, this vortex will show up every time you clean this garbage only. Otherwise, you have to wait for hours for this to show - often without effect.

@kreatora I rarely get any garbage spawning at all, and when it does it's not anywhere near the reef. I've never seen a vortex. I do sometimes get a survey option on the reef, but it only shows up once or twice a Sim week and the survey task shows up in the career daily.
  • Yeah, nothing's really spawning, can't find the sea turtles, and the buoys aren't working. I guess my sim is going to work in office from now on.It's kinda nuts how long this bug's been around.

I've had trouble with this on Xbox Series X, both on the daily work task and on the work from home task. My Sim completed the Survey task from the fishing spot about a dozen times over 2 days and 2 trips. She also completed it from the buoy. But it still remained unchecked no matter how many times she did it.

Eventually I got it to work by clicking on turtles, I thought it was never going to work.

  • This career task is very difficult to complete. The buoy option doesn't work and its nearly impossible to find the exact right spot to click on in the ocean bay. The hitbox for the fish is extremely small and the camera needs to be angled at the exact right spot to click on it. I was actually sure it was completely broken until I came to this thread.

I'm on my fourth play-through of the Marine Biologist career. Something seems to have changed with this work task since the last time I tried it. In the past I was able to complete this task by clicking on sea turtles in the water (not the babies from the turtle hatching, that is different) or schools of fish that spawn in a few places around Mua Pel'am. On this play-through I haven't seen any turtles in the water in 2+ weeks of playing. The schools of fish still spawn a few times a day and I can still complete the work tasks by clicking on one of those.

There are two spawn points that have been working fairly regularly, where the schools of fish will spawn several times each day. I have been able to complete the work task at one of these two spots every time it has come up. One spawn point is in the lagoon near the waterfall and the second is on the other side of the island near what looks like a fallen pillar in the water:

You have to look carefully because there isn't any pop-up menu that shows up just by hovering the cursor over the fish. All you see is a small "gear" symbol and the menu does not show up until you click on the gear. As others have already stated, clicking on the Survey Ocean Wildlife option on the green buoy does not complete this task, and I wish they'd just remove it to avoid confusion.
