Wow! Am I like a mentor now?? :p I love it! Well, @PinkTNT...would you believe it if I told you that this is my first legacy challenge?! Believe it! o:)
I wish I had some super secret formula as to how this story has gained soo much renown, but...I don't :'( . BUT...in addition to being addicted to this game for all these years, I also enjoy writing. I've been blogging on and off for 10 years. So, I suppose you could say I've learned a lot from that. I just applied the same principles. My blogs don't have nearly the same following as this legacy does, but I'm happy with my couple dozen followers :D
Whether you blog or you just post your updates here in the forums, do it consistently. You don't necessarily need to put something out every day, but do it regularly--even if it's just to say hi or something. When people don't hear from you, they move on. Always reply to comments. It makes your page inviting and makes people feel like you actually care what they think. When people follow me, I always like to thank them for following if I can.
My characters are adorable because I make them that way :p My imagination is WILD, and sometimes I think I may be slightly crazy, so that probably plays a role LOL. But seriously though, a lot of my characters have voices. Like, when I write their lines, I hear them saying it a certain way according to their personality. I get really wrapped up in them, and that's when they really come alive. When you read the chapters, you can probably tell which ones don't have voices because, a.) they're not very developed, and b.) you don't hear from them much lol. Just have fun with them!
Oh! Here's one piece of advice I just thought of: Let the characters do the talking. I tell you...almost EVERY time I sit down to write my chapters, I have my pictures all made out, a working title, and an idea for the dialogue. I would say 7 times out of 10 I end up with something different! I just write whatever the character would say because if I insert myself into the story, then I'll either throw off the balance or they'll sound like Shakespearean orators LOL.
Another, don't be afraid to try something new if what you're doing doesn't work. About 10-15 chapters ago, I felt the story going a little bit sour and I felt trapped. The first four generations of Pruett heirs told their own stories in the first person, and it worked at the time. It was easy to do too because I only had to develop one character. But, when the tree started getting bigger, I said to myself, "hmmmm...there are all these great Sims around here that no one knows about because of this voice...that's not fair!" @aroseinbloom probably remembers that conversation. Thanks to the encouragement from her, I decided to change the voice so other characters could be known and heard. I didn't want to do it though. I like consistency! I'm a perfectionist. I like symmetry, balance, order...and I don't like my food to touch!! Wait...what? Sorry......as I was saying :p
Anyway...that was probably waaaaay more than what you wanted. I can't control my fingers when they get near a keyboard. I'd love to check out your story. Where can I read it?
Be sure to pay your tuition of $895 for the next legacy challenge master class LOL. Don't mind me....
