Renee has always been in love with books and research. There were so many interesting things in the world that she yearned to know about. Although she's never really had an interest in interacting with sims - human/vampire/alien alike, studying sims' behavior was one thing that she's truly been interested in.
See, Renee thinks that she is the ward of the asylum and she has been sent there due to her intelligence and eagerness to study sim behavior. That's the only logical explanation she could give herself for being admitted.
