Finding Her Way: a slice of life Simstory

"So what is your daughter doing now that she's finished high school?"

Chandler and Julie Ellicott always answered that question politely, but they couldn't help feeling uncomfortable every time it was asked.

The Ellicotts: Julie (L) and Chandler (R)

Some people asked it innocently enough, the way friends ask each other about their children.  Others, however, were motivated by a decidedly more unfriendly emotion.

The Ellicotts were Willow Creek's "Perfect Couple."  Chandler was handsome, athletic, a successful Investor.  Julie was beautiful and talented, too, a Painter whose works were critically acclaimed and popular with the public.  Chandler, in particular, had a fairly high opinion of himself, but could you blame him?  That was the worst trait that would emerge from an honest appraisal of the Ellicotts.

Beth Ellicott

Chandler and Julie's happy marriage produced one child:  their daughter Elizabeth.  A precocious Toddler and a curious Child, Beth grew into a cute, vivacious Teen.  She was a core member of a group of kids, roughly agemates, who grew up together in Willow Creek and attended Copperdale High together.  Beth had every advantage a child could want, and  while she escaped becoming Self-Absorbed, High Maintenance or a Snob, some of her teachers wondered if her privilege made life a bit too easy for her.  Her grades were good, but not spectacular, and she showed no particular interest in any field of study.

To be fair, Beth ran with a crowd that set the bar very high.  Tim Horton was the most acclaimed athlete Copperdale High had ever produced.  Angie Reynolds was regarded by CHS's veteran teachers as the best student they'd ever taught.  Cameron Ross would have looked like a star if he'd come along at any other time; in this group, he seemed merely "average."  Beth was something like Cameron in that respect.

Most of the members of the Willow Creek gang had gone on to achieve considerable success.  Tim was establishing himself in Business, and doing well.  Angie, to nobody's surprise, was a successful Doctor.  Cameron started more slowly, but he was now beginning a career as a Veterinarian...and was in a serious relationship with Dr. Reynolds.  Beth was a little younger than Tim, Angie, and Cam--barely a Young Adult now--but she finished Copperdale High without any sense of what she might want to do next.  She could have easily earned acceptance to either the University of Britechester or Foxbury Institute--possibly with Distinction at UBrite--but she didn't apply to university at all.

That's why Chandler and Julie felt uncomfortable with "What's Beth doing now?"  Especially when it was asked by people who were jealous of the Ellicott family and their visible signs of success.

The Rosses, Reynoldses, and Hortons weren't among those people.  Dan and Courtenay Ross, Andrew and Ann Reynolds, and Aaron and Ellen Horton all believed Beth would find her place.  "She'll find her passion, and when she does, she'll never look back," Courtenay assured Julie.

For now, however, Beth's passion remained undiscovered.

  • Chapter 1:  This might work...

Don't think for a moment that Beth was completely content to drift through life without purpose.  Her friends were almost all high achievers, and she had always been impressed by and, perhaps, a bit envious of their accomplishments.  There were times when she thought she should simply pick an occupation and pursue it.  Deep inside, however, the young woman knew that plan would never make her happy, satisfied, or successful.

One beautiful Sunday morning in early Fall, Beth was feeling particularly restless and unhappy.  After moping around for a while, she decided to reach out to a friend.  She called Angie Reynolds, and the two of them agreed to meet at the Willow Cafe.

Beth explained her dilemma to her physician friend.  Angie couldn't relate directly to Beth's situation; she had known she wanted to be a doctor from childhood, but Beth knew she could trust Angie to give her loving, reasoned advice.

"I know I need to do something, but I can't think of what I want to do," Beth explained.

Angie nodded. "Do you know what you don't want to do?"

Beth paused for a long moment.  "I really don't see myself pursuing a traditional career," she sighed.  "It's not that I don't want to work. I just don't want to go to work every day, at the same place, doing the same thing.   Take yourself for example.  You're always practicing medicine, but you're helping different people with different problems every day.   I would love that."

"It's never too late to go to university," Angie pointed out.  "With 12 credits in Biology, you'll be a nurse practitioner, if I remember correctly."

Beth shook her head.  "I don't think going to university is right for me.  I'm not sure enough about what I want to do.  That's the thing; I want to do all kinds of things, but not enough to make a whole career out of any of them..."

Angie's brown eyes lit up as an idea popped into her head.  "Who says you have to pick just one?"

Beth (L) and Angie (R) discuss Beth's plans

    "I'm listening..."

"Lots of people have non-traditional jobs, B.  Think about your mom...she sells some of her paintings, doesn't she?

"Yes, but she's really talented," Beth pointed out.

"Because she's worked at it.  You're a very good writer, Beth. If you worked at that, you could sell some of your writing.  And you're getting better and better at cooking.  Maybe you could open a food stall.  And I think you tried to learn to knit once upon a time, didn't you?"

Beth's blue-green eyes lit up, too.  "And if I got pretty good at several of them, I could do all of them..."

Angie nodded and giggled.  "That is truthfully not as silly as it seems.  You'll be a gig worker."

    "A...versatile freelancer."

"An independent contractor."  The friends clasped hands across the table and laughed together.

"Thank you so much, Angie. I can't tell you how good this feels...to feel like I have a plan."

"You don't have to.  I can tell."

That evening, Beth sat down and made a list of different things the Versatile Freelancer could do.

She could do only three of these things with any ability at all. She'd have to learn the rest from Day One.

And she'd have to convince her parents to continue to support her while she learned.

An overachiever of a different type, who can't pick just one thing she'd like to do well? ;)

Thank you for stopping by, mightyspritesims

P.S. I wrote another chapter last night, but it was blocked by the arcane system of permissions that has been put in place here.  I did something that triggered a declaration that I had "exceeded the maximum number of posts I can publish." I believe I posted twice yesterday.

I'll be back soon with a somewhat shorter version of that post.

Thanks, rosemow .  I kinda like the name (Beth and) I came up with.  I hope you enjoy following along...thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  • It is a great start to your story 🙂 I hope that you will enjoy writing it.  Beth will find what she enjoys doing and then it will become a great part of her life. Sometimes things can take a little while.

Thank you for your kind words, rosemow .  l like to write, and Z and I have some ideas about how we'll start the story.  After that, we'll see what the game holds in store for us (and our characters!)😊

  • Chapter 2:  This might work

Chandler and Julie Ellicott could afford any house in Willow Creek, but they lived in the Foundry Creek home they'd bought when Beth was a Toddler.  A few of Julie's paintings highlighted their pleasant, somewhat eclectic decor.

Beth still occupied her childhood bedroom, too.  It had undergone several redecorations over the years, but when she awakened each morning, she could look out her window at the view across the creek that she'd seen as a girl.

Honestly, Chandler and Julie hadn't thought they'd still have their daughter in the bedroom beside theirs.  They figured she would first move into a dorm at UBrite or Foxbury, and perhaps from there to a flat in San Myshuno or a shared house in Newcrest.  They loved having Beth at home, but all three of them found themselves wishing things were different sometimes.

The evening after Beth made her list, she sat down with her parents to explain her plan.

    This might work...

"This won't be easy," Chandler told his daughter.  "Even if you begin with some talent, it takes a lot of time and hard work to develop it."

"That's a job itself," Julie added.  "Especially when you're trying to maximize several talents at once."

Beth nodded.  She'd never been afraid of work; she simply hadn't found any one thing she wanted to work hard at for a very long time.  Working on several possibilities at once seemed to energize her.

Chandler thought for a moment.  "You know, you're going to need more room than you have here, sweetheart."

Beth's face fell.  "I know.  That's the one thing I can't seem to figure out."

Julie looked over at her husband, and Chandler winked back.  "I think Dad and I have already figured it out...haven't we?"

The Ellicotts actually owned two houses in Willow Creek. Several years ago, Chandler and Julie had purchased a property on Courtyard Lane that needed a lot of TLC.  They fixed it up, and they'd been renting it to an older couple until several weeks ago.  Now their tenants were living in Tartosa, and they had a solution to Beth's problem.  Beth would "rent" the house from her parents.  Chandler and Julie would have to keep paying the taxes on the house for a while, but Beth would be sharing the proceeds from her "independent contracting" for a while.  They didn't work out the details; this was family, after all.

As Beth relaxed in her bed that night, she thought about her plan. It was scary and exciting and impulsive and energizing, and it felt right.

    Yeah, this might work.

I hope that Beth will enjoy living in her new home, and that she will go well as she starts her new career 🙂
