Housing Type: Townhouses

I feel like townhouses wouldn’t to have to be locked in one world like apartments are, and they could be customized.

I’ve seen plenty of these builds on YouTube and it kinda stinks that we have to imagine that it functions like an apartment would :/
  • Bringing this up again because I think this would be a nice feature, especially for builders like me.

    What do we think?
  • We definitely need terraced houses and semies. I expected that we would be able to build them like apartments when the CL EP came out, but then that never happened unfortunately.
  • Not allowing apartments to be built was a huge mistake tbh - I love using townhouses in TS3.
  • To be honest, I preferred how the issue of apartments and townhouses were actually handled in the Sims 2 era over Sims 3 in some respects. Admittedly, I had not really played around as much with the feature as of the University pack in Sims3 as I had prior to it (where I remember it required a maze of different cheats to navigate to build apartments along with the use of a "rabbit hole"-type of building--at least, as of the Night Life expansion pack that introduced apartments), so I don't know from the perspective of a builder or player outside the university system how or if things may have changed with the latter pack as I didn't get much of a chance to find out.

However, with Sims2, it seemed much simpler in some respects to designate different apartments or townhouses and to construct them and have multiple playable households all within the scope of the same lot.

With Sims4, while I was excited to see the return of apartments and love some of the apartment buildings, wish we were also given the option to construct townhouses or custom build apartment houses. Some of the worlds we have in this game would be otherwise perfect for them. I even have a lot up for download featuring townhouses, yet unfortunately, because of the way the things are set up with this game, it would still only count as one household versus three separate households.

That said, I suppose we can continue hoping that perhaps we may see the return of townhouses--and hopefully more customization options as well where just apartments are concerned.
  • That's why I've recently begun speaking about apartment doors.

Apartment doors along with multi-family mailboxes (as in TS2) would make it possible to make town houses, rooming houses, cul-de-sacs and all other manner of multiple family living.

The game loses so much space that can be used for community venues due to housing. If we had the ability to house more than one family group on a lot, it would free up space for many more activities. I, for one, am very tired of switching and swapping buildings, depending on what I need at the time. It would be wonderful to lay out our worlds as we see fit and to have room for everything that is required in a thriving people simulator.

I'd say Sims 2 apartments were infinitely better than Sims 3 apartments due to the fact that there were several apartments in each building that you could actually visit, as opposed to the stupid NPC doors of The Sims 3 - I still don't understand why they thought that was ever a good idea.

I was really excited about the apartments in San Myshuno at first but now I hardly ever play in them.

I think they can make S2 apartments, I just think with CL they wanted the whole tall building in a big city feel.

The treatment of apartments, though, in CL reminds me of the treatment we had of apartments in Sims3 and Night Life where we essentially had this shell of a defined space and had to build within it (although, with some lots permitting multiple apartments within them in CL unlike in NL where it was just one).

Again, as someone who both likes to build/decorate as much as play, I personally would have preferred it to have been handled more like Sims2 had just given what was possible.

Also, with Sims4, as we now have the ability to save rooms, I'm wondering if it could have been possible to somehow save an apartment and then "clone" it to form a high rise of apartment units (if we chose to play highrises and multiple households, depending upon what was technically feasible within the game, of course) in addition to just the shells we have?

On a related note, while I like the fact that we can save individual rooms, I wish it were somehow possible to save entire existing apartments--as well as to offer them up for download.
  • I enjoyed having both options, shells and purpose-built.

TS4 needs apartment shells because a player would never be able to build a lot from scratch that looks tall enough. The game restricts structures over a certain amount of levels (3? 5?)

However, it would be wonderful to also have the option to build smaller multi-family dwellings: townhouses, rooming houses, re-purposed factories and mansions, mother-in-law-suits, carriage houses, pool houses, basement apartments, etc.

    The possibilities are nearly endless
