If you saw Rayne in public, you would think he was an open book. Well educated, probably via private schools. Discerning, a man of refined, if not expensive taste. You would see his tailored suits, and his perfect posture. You would hear his thought out eloquent speech and instantly know he was an arrogant snob, looking down his nose on society. You would see these things, and you would be wrong. Of course it wouldn’t be your fault. You see, those things are the exact things Rayne wants you to see. He uses his image to keep people at arm’s length. While you are busy making assumptions about him, he is easily finding out everything he needs to know about you. He knows before you even extent your hand whether or not he likes you. More often than not it’s the latter. Rayne prides himself on his ability to read people, he’s never been wrong…well except once. But to be fair, I was wrong about him too.
The first time I met Rayne, I hated him instantly. I was a bubble gum kind of girl, and he was a textbook kind of boy. He made a snide remark about my cloths, and my lack of interest in what he referred to as nourishing dialoged. I called him a pretentious puppet of his father, and we parted ways on less than cordial terms. The second time we met was a month later at the campus book store. I was sifting through the latest manga, and he walked up beside me, running his index finger across the book spines on display. He shifted his eyes towards me, scowling at my dared presents in his path. “Do you even know the backstory on that series? Or are you just hanging out hoping some handsome boy will bite the hook you’ve set?”
“Are you serious?” I asked, trying to sound as hateful and intimidating as a girl wearing pink bows could sound. He didn’t reply, only raising an eyebrow in an ever taunting manner. I could feel my blood beginning to boil. I could also see Rayne relishing the rise he had successful pulled out of me. “Dark path or everlasting version of the story?” I hissed defiantly. “Or if you really want to get into it, let’s talk about the alternate rein storyline, or maybe the antihero series.” I rose to book in a threatening pose, pointing it right at his head. “I’ve got all day.” His eyes shifted to the book and a sly grin creeped across his lips.
“I stand corrected.” He replied coolly, pushing his glassed back up on his nose. “A fellow fan of the series indeed. A rare pleasure that deserves a proper introduction.” He extended his hand in an attempt to introduce himself. I just kind of stared at it, in a bit of shock.
“Are you serious?” I asked again. This time he only smiled in return.
“I am.” He said. “But perhaps we could grab a coffee and sit first. I am eager to hear all your opinions on the series, and perhaps any other series you may follow.”
“You know I’m the same girl you called stupid last month at the clubhouse right?” I protested. “You know I think you’re a jerk right?” He laughed and retracted his hand.
“I thought you looked familiar.” He laughed. “My apologies.” He stepped away from the shelf and turned to leave.
“But I guess a coffee couldn’t hurt. You know, just talking about a shared interest…right.” He returned to my side and nodded.
“Of course.” He extended his arm towards the coffee bar, and I followed his direction.
Rayne loves manga, and of course anime. When he’s at home he dresses in ripped up jeans, and old t-shirts. He likes alternative music, but has a secret passion for pop that he would never admit to. When we are together, we like to stay at home, and watch old movies, or binge watch entire anime series in a single night. He hates diner parties, and charity balls, and he feels crushed under the weight of his father’s legacy. I’m not a rich girl; I love the thought of dressing up and going to parties. I love fancy dinners, and grand events. Still my favorite thing to do is to dress in old cloths, and sit on the floor in Rayne’s apartment, watching old movies, far away from all of those things. It’s the only place where the real man can be found, and I’m the only one who gets to see him there.
