Chapter 12- A Death in the Family
Penny travels to the arts district to source ingredients for her serums. She's set up a playground area outside of the pharmacy so Cyrus can play while she works.
Nicola still hates sharing a room with Cyrus. At one point he woke her up during the night. "Why did you wake me up you little twerp? I have a test tomorrow." In spite of these frustrations, she's developed enough confidence in her cooking skills to throw a dinner party for family and close family friends.
Austin is an adult now. He kept the birthday party low key, with just a few guests. Later that day, he was canvasing in Windenburg when he met the lovely Alex Moyer.
Lately, Penny has been worried about her relationship with Victor. It seems that their lives are completely taken up with their business and children. She finally finds a moment to talk to him about it, and he assuages her fears. "I'll always be here for you."
Cyrus' birthday is around the corner, and the clock is ticking on his becoming a Top Notch toddler. Penny and Cyrus age up on the same day.
Penny has a conversation with Cyrus the next day. "Guess what? You're going to have your own room!" Cyrus is puzzled by this. "Will Nicola move in to your room?" Penny stifles a sardonic laugh. "Hardly. You're going to move into the nursery in your father's house. You can still come over when ever you feel like a story, or a game of chess, or a talk. You'll just sleep in your father's house." The yellow nursery is in the attic of the rose house. Cyrus climbs up there. It's a cheerfully decorated space, but somehow Cyrus still feels like an exile.
Victor dies in the basement while replicating serums for the pharmacy business. It's a shock to the whole household. To Austin, Victor had been his mentor for so long. Nicola is furious. Why did he have to go when she needed him?
That weekend Penny delivers a touching eulogy at the cemetery. I don't usually bother with funerals, so I didn't realize that if you deliver a eulogy on a community lot random townies will gather around and listen. Cyrus is the only member of the family unaffected by the loss. Victor was never unkind to him, but they were never close either.
Progress Update for the Rose Generation:
Standing Rule- Only have one child.
Career- Non-Profit Director, Level 8
Aspiration- Serial Romantic, Level 4
Other- Leave someone at the altar (Complete), Get married for the first time as an elder.
