Sure thing I can get us started again...
Unrelated to this weeks updates but - how did you guys get started in the world of writing? Have you guys been writing before (The Sims) Or is this your first go round?
What is the best advise you can give someone just starting out with this hobby?
I first started dabbling in writing when I was in seventh grade. I didn't write stories back then I wrote poems. I still have some of them. It's antique! One of them is a ballad about me being trapped in a dream where I am to be wed to personified Moon. How crazy is that? :)
At high school I wrote romantic stories not so different from my current simlit. There was always a mystery involved. When I was seventeen or so I read and wrote fan fiction. I even started a fan fiction archive web site that had been active for a long time. I met many young writers and new friends while I was the admin (one of those friends is a published author now!) I also translated stories from english to my native language for my web. That was probably the reason why I was offered a job by a publishing house as a translator.
And then I stopped writing my own stuff. Weird thing, translating other people's stories caused that I suddenly had no own stories to tell. I felt I lost the ability to tell them. Anything I would create seemed too dull comparing to the stories I was translating. I became overly critical to my work and it prevented me to write anything. About a year ago I quit the job. But being a creative person I felt the need to express myself again. At the same time The Sims 4 were released and remembering how much fun I had playing The Sims 2 I bought it. I also remembered that I read some pretty good stories done with TS2 and I started looking for TS4 simlit. I found The Bloomer Legacy which was an inspiration for the Heffners.
My advise:
- Don't limit yourself in any way when you write.
- Don't obsess about grammar and spelling and all that stuff when you're in the middle of your writing spree. You can edit later.
- Don't be too critical or you won't even get to start telling your story.
- Practice and read books a lot. Reading means enhancing your vocabulary, practice means that writing gets easier and easier with every try.
- Write such story you yourself would love to read.
And my last, most difficult and very important advice to follow:
- Finish your story! The worst story is the unfinished one. (10 out of 10 readers agree.)
