Well, I've found one of the quotes I remembered, which seems to point to a possible change... one day lol. This from Simgurugraham on 28/10/14:
One thing we have been discussing and investigating and revising the current world maps. We've heard a lot of feedback from players that they feel too disconnected from the experience and from each other, rather than feeling like a cohesive world. We're brainstorming some ideas around improving that, so don't expect anything in the near future, but it is on our radar as something we'd like to address.
