Preteen Ideas

Hey, I need some writing ideas for a story or project that focuses on preteens, 9-13.  But using the child age group, I’m looking for creative ideas that highlight the dynamics between the two age groups, child and preteen, like how they work together, their differences, and fun or dramatic situations they could get into. Maybe something with adventure, humor, friendships, or even rivalries? Let me know your thoughts!

  • I don't think I understand entirely. You're going to use the age group child to portray 9-13 year olds. Ok. But then you say you need ideas of how to highlight the dynamics between the two age groups. Which two? Child and teens? Or child and adult? children younger than 9 and over 9?

Also do you have any idea beyond age? What do you want to portray, play? Do you have any story in mind?

Without knowing which kind of story you're after it's hard to answer, but there are a few ways I use to separate younger kids from older ones:

    • Clothing and hairstyle (make one more childish than the other)
    • Preferred games: a younger child would be more into toys, dollhouses and being pushed on the swings and the kids network, an older child more into music, watching BETWEEN TV, playing computer games or collecting void critters. The monkey bars do this well, before too much skill the child can play, after a certain skill level the child can "hang out" on top of the monkey bars instead of playing.
  • Children are imaginative, so they could play in the tree house for example and have a whole world in their heads. Meanwhile, the preteens could be growing out of that stage and maybe tease the younger for still believing in fairy tales.

Or a child could be soon aging up into a preteen maybe they're not ready to give up their childhood stuff. Maybe they're trying to figure out what it means to be a preteen themselves and have to deal with the peer pressure to grow up.

Or maybe the preteen has a specific goal or something they want to get and they go in this adventure with their friends to attain it. (Inspired by 8-Bit Christmas, which is a really fun kids movie.) Hope this helps!
