So I lost the challenge. Why? Because the designers need to go back to school for remedial math. The logic (if any) behind their math is baffling.
My sim has been working her little heart out to make the Mansion Baron challenge. She has maxed Painting, Writing, Programming, Cooking, Gourmet, Handiness, Gardening, Violin and Athletics and essentially done everything she could to not lose her mind in this tortuous fight to make her big debut as a wealthy, talented debutant. With the house valued at $220,000 she started socking away money for the grand finale build out because depreciation was getting out of hand. At $145,000 in savings she thought she could make it, and went into massive renovation mode. Spent every penny! Depreciation took 10% off the top and the finished product was only worth $345,000. Ok. Sell the $17,000 painting in the living room and finish this puppy! (The sim-made painting that for some reason is NOT counted in the value of the house) Not 5 Sim minutes go by between first build mode and second build mode. Add $345,000 house+ $17,000 columns, paintings, etc. - $1700(depreciation) = ?? $320,000 house. Plum, anyone?? I had already turned the 8x8 initial room into the living room and moved all the other items to different parts of the house. Put in doors and stairs and arches to connect it. So my poor defeated sim spent the last three days of the challenge in a mansion instead of an 8x8 room. She went to the sidewalk to mail her books. I didn't let her talk to anyone, but she did have a front door. She puts another $60,000 into the house and barely scrapes out the required $350,000.
Save. Go into build mode. Demolish the ugly monstrosity this challenge created and build something more my style. Material value recovered from the demolition of ever blade of grass on the lot of the house just this instant valued at $350,000? $341,000. Initial depreciation had already been calculated and no time had passed for any further devaluation to occur. Conclusion: Maxis is stealing my Sim's money as well as taking me for everything I have.....
