For the duration of the challenge, you may only stay on one floor, within an 8 x 8 area (Or appx 64 Tiles). This doesn't prevent you from adding other floors to your home, as long as you do not have any way of accessing them.
This is not without exceptions.

The front stairs there were used only to get into the house. The stairs within the fenced in area existed to allow access to the gardening area. It is still only 64 floor tiles available, as the house is 3 x 8, and the yard is 5 x 8.
