You can connect the rooms, like put them next to each other, but your Sim cannot have access to them. They must stay in the 8x8. You can use the computer to talk to other Sims because in TS4 that does not actually add them to your friends list. You are not 'meeting' anyone. You can make a little fenced in area for your mailbox. The mailman will just throw your mail over the fence. Be careful, though, my Sim kept trying to talk to the mailman.
