Item 8 on the "gameplay rules" says you can turn aging on or off. Because of that short/normal/long lifespan options are up to you. Some folks like to play on normal to add a deadline. Others would rather continue playing their character after they're freed. I'm playing on long myself so she can still be youngish when she leaves the box.
